Have you looked at your window screens lately? After a long winter, they might look worse for wear. Throughout the seasons, screens collect dust, pollen, and debris, affecting air quality when you open your window and reducing natural light inside. Giving them a thorough cleaning allows more sunshine inside and brightens everything up.
Our Custom Wood Shutters & Blinds team can share our favorite tricks for tackling this tedious but necessary task. As you go about your window and screen cleaning, you might decide to update your window treatments. We would love to help you find new blinds, shades, or shutters to meet your home’s needs and aesthetic, allowing you to have the ultimate fresh start for spring.
Before beginning, it's helpful to know that it’s easier and cleaner to complete this job outside. Carefully remove the screens from the window frames to prevent damage. If you’re unsure how to do this, search the manufacturer’s website for information. Once the screens you get the screens out, use a vacuum with the provided brush attachment or a clean microfiber cloth to clear away dirt and dust before washing.
Then, you’ll mix a few drops of dish soap with tepid water and use a softer brush, not the vacuum attachment, to scrub both sides of the screen. For stubborn grime, add a small amount of white vinegar to the soapy water to break down the buildup. Using light water pressure from your hose, rinse off the soap until the water runs clear and you’re satisfied with the results.
Let the screens air dry indoors so more dirt or pollen won’t accumulate on them. Ensuring the screens are fully dry before reinstalling prevents streaks on windows and avoids trapping moisture in the frames.
For the ultimate spring cleaning of your windows, we recommend cleaning the windows while the screens are drying. Despite your window screens serving as a debris filter, the glass can accumulate dust and smudges. It’s also wise to check the glass for cracks or other damage. If you find any, complete any minor repairs.
After inspecting your window, use a small brush or the vacuum attachment to remove dust from hard-to-reach areas. To clean the window, you don’t need to go out and buy window cleaner if you don’t have any on hand. Alternatively, you can create a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water to remove dirt from the window glass.
Avoid wiping your windows with paper towels, which can leave lint and streaks behind. We recommend trying clean and dry microfiber towels. Some like using newspapers, but the ink can end up on your hands.
When the windows and screens are dry, reinstall them, fitting them snugly back into place.
